Have any of you seen the new horror movie Rings?
It is a reboot (or third installation, however you'd rather see it) of the Ring movie franchise. The original Ring revolves around a cursed videotape which kills those who view it 7 days to the hour in which they watched it the previous week.
In the reboot that was just released and may still be in theaters, a cursed videotape is found in an old vcr and is uploaded to the web as a quicktime file. I'm not going to say too much for those who wish to watch the movie, but I will say that cicadas did play a huge role in the ending of the movie.
I found this to be strange, seeing as cicadas didn't play a role in the first 2 ring movies. This was a new addition to the lore.
Now I know, it seems like mere coincidence, but I also realized that there is a fair amount of Prime number symbolism within the lore, as well. Let's take a look:
3 - February 3rd, the day the movie is released in theaters
7 - After you watch the cursed footage, you have 7 days to either make a copy and have someone watch it, or die exactly 7 days later.
13 - In the new movie, the main actress is told by the antagonist that she was, in fact, the 13th person Samara had reached out to in attempts to find her
2017 - the year the movie Rings was released. Which is funny, because the movie was actually completed in 2015. It was also slated to release last year around Halloween, however the decision was made to wait until February 3, 2017. Is it possible they waited until 2017 because it is a prime year?
Let's not forget, Samara herself has similarities to a cicada. For example: She spends most of her time underground, waiting, biding her time, and when it is finally time to kill her next victim, she comes out and leaves nothing but a shell in her wake (the victim's body appears hard and contorted, much like a discarded exotskeleton of a cicada) She doesn't stick around for a long time, just long enough to do her thing, claim her next victim, and then it's back to the well to wait for the next victim. Cicadas also do not have a long time above ground. They molt, mate, ensure the continuation of their species, and then die.
